Slower speeds, nice curves, rolling scenery makes for a good ride

The Welch Village run is a quick ride that features some nice curves and rolling scenery. It’s a great little relaxed ride with slower speed limits.

I took the ride in early May 2019 and there was still patches of snow on the small skiing hill at Welch Village (see picture), but the roads were clear and clean.

I got fueled up at King’s Bar and Grill in Miesville, MN before doing the run. If you are riding through Miesville (just west of Red Wing, MN) on a sun-soaked day in the summer, you will see bikes parked outside of King’s. I had a tasty homemade Blue California burger and fries for under $10. Good service and plenty of biker talk going on around the restaurant.

Welch Village Road (County Road 7) is four miles east. There’s a sign that points to Welch Village Road if you’re worried about missing it.

For the 14 miles to Vasa, you will be met with nice, easy-to-manage curves through small rolling hills at speeds that recommend 35 to 45 miles per hour. The town of Welch is in the middle of that.

There aren’t any fuel stops on the ride, but you’ll be able to fill up in Red Wing.

From Vasa, there are two options for completing the run – County Road 1 or Highway 19 Blvd. Both are equally good. The speed limit picks up to 55 and there are some nice hills and long, sweeping curves on each road.

So, take your pick – after going through Vasa, you’ll come to a T in the road and bear to the right for County Rd 1 and turn left to cut over to 19 (although 1 and 19 intersect if you bear right too).

There isn’t a lot of traffic on the road and the ease of managing the curves makes it a great ride if you want to get your sea legs under you early in the season or you want to bring a newbie rider on a fun little run.
