Spearfish Canyon is the Quintessential Motorcycle Road in the Black Hills
When you get home and tell your friends that you rode your motorcycle to the Black Hills, the next question will most likely be, “Did you ride Spearfish Canyon?” If you say that you didn’t, it would mean that you didn’t fully experience the Black Hills. Spearfish Canyon is a staple for any trip to the Black Hills.
And it’s always worth the ride.
Take either Exit 14 or Exit 10 off of I-90 at Spearfish and navigate to Spearfish Canyon Highway by the Spearfish Canyon Country Club. You can also start in Lead and take Alt 14 to Cheyenne Crossing and head north. The speed limit is 35 mph through the canyon and the road into Lead is opens up to 55 mph on Alt 14. It’ll take about 45 minutes.
The Spearfish Canyon ride is 28 miles from Spearfish to Lead. The scenery on this ride is awesome. There are stunning views of rock walls and forest through twisting roads. The 35-mph speed limit allows for a couple of glances at the scenery.
There are also plenty of spots to stop and take pictures of waterfalls and epic backdrops. It seems like every time I get on the Spearfish Canyon road, I let out a sigh and smile. It’s familiar but always excellent.
The Bottom Line
Don’t leave the Black Hills without riding your motorcycle through Spearfish Canyon.
