ND 22 Killdeer Gateway to the Badlands
Distance: 50 miles
Time: 52 minutes
ND 22 from Killdeer is the gateway to the North Dakota Badlands
This ride follows North Dakota State Highway 22 between Killdeer ND Highway 23 about 11 miles west of New Town. I came in from the west and had to cut across on 73 instead of getting to ND 22 on ND 23 due to rain in the north. The map above shows 15 miles cut off of the north end of the ride.
ND 22 is the gateway to the North Dakota Badlands. The ride starts either in Killdeer or 35 miles south of Killdeer in Dickinson on Highway 22. The scenery is fairly flat and straight heading into Killdeer, but it opens into wooded hills just to the north of Killdeer. There are some long sweeping curves between some long straightaways. The scenery on the north end of the ride is beautiful wide-open skies and some small elevation changes.
The Bottom Line
North Dakota’s best scenery is in the Badlands and this ride is a good introduction to that area. A day’s ride in North Dakota could easily connect with other rides through the North Dakota Badlands, the Missouri River area and the western North Dakota grasslands.
