Road Rube Rides
Arkansas Scenic Byway 71
Distance: 42 miles
Time: 55 minutes
Arkansas Scenic Byway 71 is an old stagecoach road and it rides like it
The Boston Mountains run follows Arkansas Scenic Byway Highway 71 south from Greenland to Alma. The road is apparently an old stagecoach route. And it feels like it still is a stagecoach route. While none of the road is damaged with potholes, it is bumpy. It’s probably in line for one of those chip seal treatments we all love riding on right after it’s been applied (that’s sarcasm for those of you who can’t read tone).
The first 20 miles out of Greenland is just pedestrian. It’s not exciting. The vistas of the Ozarks peek through the trees as the road slowly rises in altitude. The curves are sharp and the ride is not challenging to your riding skills. It’s just a solid ride. I took that ride south to make the trek over to The Pig Trail, so it’s definitely a better option than the interstate.
The Bottom Line
The Boston Mountains ride is not a must-ride road, but it is still in a beautiful setting and it’s a good alternative to the interstate. However, the interstate does have some nice views of the landscape at 70 mph.
