Defiance River Run
Distance: 55 miles
Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
The Defiance River Run follows the Maumee River and is motorcycle bliss
There are a couple ways to take this ride along the Maumee River. It starts in Defiance on 424 which turns into 24 and eventually North River Road into Maumee and then Toledo. I took 424 past the town of Napoleon and cut across to the south side of the river on 109. Then I took 65 all the way into Perryburg and Toldeo. The speed limit is 55 everywhere other than in the towns along the way. (Note: July 2019 – the bridge is being replaced in Defiance so it is best to take 281 from Highway 24 and pick up 424 from it rather than slog through the traffic detouring into Defiance)
The ride is great. There’s not much traffic on the road and it follows the curls of the river. There are some views of the river outside of Defiance and more peeks of it throughout the ride. The speed is consistent and the curves are natural and breezy. The scenery is a balance of river views, woods and open farmland.
The Bottom Line
The Defiance River Run along the Maumee River is perfect for an afternoon ride or a secondary way to head east through the western part of Ohio. It’s an easy ride with a few manageable curves at speed. It’s an excellent alternative to the four-lane highway.
